I recently got back from Antigua, Guatemala, I was there working with Pacific Dental Services Foundation. They provide donated dentistry across the globe. I had the opportunity to volunteer, on adults and on children from the orphanage. I saw many of the children with lots of poor oral hygiene. We were there to help take care of their needs and educate them. It really made me think how lucky we are to live where we have dental and medical care a phone call away. These people live with being in pain with infected teeth. I am so grateful we were there to help and get them out of pain. There were so many times I had to hold back the tears through out the day, because I don't see children with that many infected teeth through out my work day. They were all so grateful for our services, we got so many hugs and many thank yous. On the third day of clinic is when the children from the orphanage came. I watched them play with the new toys that they were getting, this one little girl (the one in the pictures) was so happy when she got a brand new Barbie doll, it was like Christmas morning to these kids. I just wanted to watch them play all day long. This was one of the best experiences I have ever done. I have been a dental assistant for 21 years, and I have always been asked the same random question throughout my years. Why would you want to work in people mouths for? Well the answer is to help people in need and get them out of pain, and see them smile. that is a rewarding experience. If you have ever thought about volunteering abroad, I would definitely go for it. You will come back with a beautiful story to share. Guatemala will always have a special place in my heart.
